About Acupuncture

Acupuncture today has become a highly respected and popular method of medical treatment in the United States. Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese practice that can be traced back for at least 2,500 years. The general theory of acupuncture is that specific patterns of energy flow through the body by means of channels and are essential for health.  Acupuncture is most commonly known as using small, sterile needles inserted into specific locations in the skin. Modern acupuncture also uses a variety of other treatment methods, including acupressure, electro-acupuncture, herbs, laser, nutrition counseling, and magnets.

There are different types of acupuncture with different applications such as:

  • Body Acupuncture

Acupuncture needles are always sterilized and acupuncture is a very safe procedure. The depth of insertion of needles varies, depending on which channels are being treated. Some points barely go beyond superficial layers of skin, while some acupuncture points require more depth. The needles generally do not cause pain. Patients sometimes report pinching sensations and often pleasant sensations, as the body experiences healing. Depending on the problem, the acupuncturist might spin or move the needles, or even pass a slight electrical current through some of them.

Ear Acupuncture:

In ear acupuncture, the ears could be used as an adjunctive to body acupunctures with the same indications or could be done as single procedure.  In general, ear acupuncture is very effective in pain management such as for chronic low back pain , or neck pain, and musculoskeletal disorders. Also ear acupuncture is very effective in treatment of mood disorders such as anxiety and depression

Scalp Acupuncture:

Scalp acupuncture is a modern acupuncture method. The principle of scalp acupuncture is very straightforward.  The aim is to stimulate the diseased area of the brain in order to facilitate a return of function in that area.

Scalp Acupuncture is one of a number of specialized micro-system acupuncture techniques. The more general acupuncture therapy is often called body acupuncture. In scalp acupuncture, very short, fine needles are placed on the scalp to achieve the desired therapeutic effects on different parts of the body. This technique has yielded outstanding results for thousands of patients, and has become recognized worldwide as one of the most effective methods for the treatment of a wide variety of difficult-to-manage medical conditions.

Specific examples include: acute and chronic pain syndromes, stroke, spinal cord injuries, motor and sensory dysfunctions, neuropathies, Bell's Palsy, trigeminal neuralgia ,sciatica, aphasia, cerebral palsy, attention deficit disorder, depression, anxiety, insomnia , Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and many others.
